Based upon your reading on plagiarism, why do you think we need to cite our sources?
• What would you do if someone used something you created without giving you credit?
• Consider some of the real-world plagiarism issues you have learned of that include professionals. How should those issues be handled?
• Does the Internet blur the lines of “legally owned”? Consider sites like YouTube and Wikipedia.
First I believe we need to cite our sources because someone has worked hard on their own work and they deserve the credit for their labors. Also, not citing a reference is the same as stilling something from the original author(s). If I had a publication that I had created I would contact the person and ask them to cite my work. Then I would contact the person they sent the work too and let them know that someone has plagiarized my material. As for real-world plagiarism, I am not aware of any plagiarism issues but if I had I would first go to the person doing the plagiarizing and let them know that it is work to take credit from something that is not their own, just incase they were not aware of such professional courtesy. When it comes to blurring legally owned before last semester I was not aware that Wikipedia was some ones interpretation not a reliable source. I never think about YouTube except for a trying to find funny videos or how to videos. So I think that we have to be aware of the references we use to make sure that we are not plagiarizing.

Hi, Steven.
ReplyDeleteI don't think most people plagiarize intentionally, then there are always people who are dishonest. I personally would never do that, because I would know deep down that it was not my work and I would not feel good about myself. Unfortunately there are some who don't have the same morals and live by the same ethics. I like you would confront someone if I knew they intentionally stole someone's work. What a cheap way to get recognition!!
It's amazing how YouTube has become a great way to communicate via video. I work at Mayo Clinic and they have several YouTube videos. I think it's great!! I'm sure there is also plagiarism to worry about with audio and speeches as well!
I never thought I would be blogging this much, that's for sure. It has been an interesting class, hasn't it?
Hey Steven and Wendy,
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Most people do not set out to plagiarize, especially students. Devious intentional plagiarism happens, but is rare. I always issue warnings and a chance to correct text and citation before I would fail an assignment or report a student because usually the plagiarism arises from carelessness, laziness, or an unclear understanding of how to paraphrase or cite sources.
Hmmmm, am I plagiarizing when I play You Tube music in seminar? I should be more careful about citing the You Tube source and will practice doing that in this week's seminar.

Hello Steven,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog segment this past week. I was very impressed with the way you would handle someone taking your idea's and making them your own. It is also good to know that you have the patience to explain things to those whom do not understand.
I thank you for your comments within your blogging.
Have a Great weekend, and do try to enjoy some time for yourself.
